Metal craftsmanship goes back for millennia in the Thai culture. There is evidence of bronze metallurgy in Thailand going back 3,500 years along with other indications of a highly sophisticated ancient culture. Siam is the name by which the country was known to the world until 1939 and again between 1945 and 1949. In 1949, an official proclamation changed the name of the country to “Prathet Thai,” or Thailand, which means “Land of the Free.”
Thailand’s place as a center of civilization is reflected in its rich forms of art and ornamentation. The Kingdom is not only endowed with dedicated and gifted artisans, but also with rich gemstone resources. Gemwork and jewelry making have flourished throughout the region’s history, and traditional belief suggests that jewels and clothing that align with the color of the day or with a birthday can bring good fortune and success to the wearer.
Quality, delicate design and exquisite detail are all hallmarks of Thai handmade jewelry.
