With the discovery of copper in ancient Lebanon, new tools, weapons and personal decorative items began to flourish – thus traditional Lebanese jewelry was born. The golden age of jewelry in Lebanon started around 1900, when skilled Armenians started to migrate there and establish their craft.
Today’s Lebanese jewelry designers work with richly colored, semi-precious gemstones along with brass and silver immersed in 24-karat gold. Gemstones range in color from blue agate to red tourmaline, sunflower yellows and deep oranges.
Works emblematic of traditional Lebanese jewelry styles are often bulky and ornate, making them sumptuous and eye-catching. Cuffs, in particular, are bold, with diverse styles that include complex floral motifs and corset shapes accented with spectacular, large stones. Even the more understated pieces of Lebanese jewelry, a simple single-stone pendant, for example, will likely have distinctive substance and power.
