With more than 40 ethnicities represented among the peoples of Kenya, the country is diverse in culture and dress. From the Swahili on the coast, to pastoral communities in the north, Kikuyu, Turkana, Luo, Rendille, Pokot and Maasai groups – the nation is rich in artistic traditions drawn from its inhabitants and the regions from which they migrated. Many of these groups maintain traditional dress and ornamentation, and elaborate silver and gold jewelry and beadwork are found across Kenya.
Included in Kenya’s population are the Fulani people, who live across a large region that crosses many borders. Traditional Fulani dress consists of long robes and jewelry including necklaces, earrings, nose rings, and anklets. Beads make up an integral part of the Fulani costume. Mali Wedding Beads, Red Faceted Trade Beads, and other glass beads are worn by Fulani women.
