India’s glorious history affects every aspect of Indian culture, including jewelry, which is an integral part of the Indian lifestyle. Jewelry making in India has also been influenced by imperial periods. The Mughals contributed precious stones and intricate carvings while the Rajputs brought in new kinds of enamels. For thousands of years, people in India have adorned themselves with jewelry created from gold, silver, stones and gems.
Indian jewelry includes different styles and designs for just about every part of the body, and each Indian region has its own distinctive style. Orissa and Andhra Pradesh are known for delicate filigree work in silver; Meenakari (jewelry enameling work) is popular in Rajasthan; the temple town of Nagercoil in south is famous for temple jewelry; and Delhi is known for Kundan jewelry. These traditional styles have never lost their appeal.
