Pre-Colombian jewelry dates back to around 4000 BC. and was characterized by extensive use of copper and its various oxides. Copper was used in ornaments, beads and earrings in addition to weapons and battle armor. By 3000 BC, the Pre-Colombians were already using the lost-wax process for jewelry, a process which is used today in industrial processes. The Colombians have long used the versatile tagua nut in their jewelry making. This remarkable natural and sustainable material has the same look and similar consistency of ivory and can be carved and colored in unlimited ways.
